My Review:

My oldest is 25, and my youngest is 10. I have spent a lot of time watching Christian movies with them. With new movies coming out all the time, we have watched a lot of movies over the years.

The Crossmaker is completely different from any Christian kids movie we've ever seen.

The Easter story is told by a Grandfather to his grandchildren. As he tells the story, they go back and forth between the kids and drawings of the Easter story while the grandfather is narrating. These are not just ordinary drawings, these are awesome full color drawings.

What a wonderful re-telling of the Easter story. We loved The Crossmaker!

Included on the DVD are 3 art lessons. Creative lettering using colored pencils, a drawing of the tomb with an angel using pastels, and 3 crosses on a hill using water colors, pen & ink, a& fluorescent crayons.

All 3 art lessons began with the instructor going over all the supplies needed and giving careful instructions.
"Never wipe your pastels with your arm or your sleeve."

The Crossmakers Bonus Features are incredible! One is called Artful Music. Where she draws a large picture of Jesus carrying the cross while music plays. She draws to the music. Definitely watch this. It's worth it.

Another one of the bonus features is The Plan of Salvation - video of drawings with voice overs. This is excellent.

Not only is The Crossmaker an entertaining movie and great art lessons, but it's an evangelism tool as well.

The Crossmaker is an incredible DVD and will make an  awesome Easter present.

Thanks to Propeller, I get to give a copy of The Crossmaker to one of you!

How Do You Hug A Porcupine~Book Review

CHEERIOS KICKS OFF ITS NEW AUTHOR CONTEST AND SEARCHES FOR THE NEXT GREAT CHILDREN’S BOOK AUTHOR

Previous Grand Prize Winner Laurie Isop’s Book, How Do You Hug a Porcupine?, to be Featured inside Three Million Specially-Marked Boxes of Cheerios this Spring

Have you ever dreamed of seeing your words in print, turned into a children’s book and read by families across America?  The Cheerios New Author Contest, which kicks off its search today for the next great new children’s book author, provides aspiring writers the perfect opportunity to make this dream a reality. One Grand Prize Winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a possible publishing deal with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, in addition to having his or her book featured inside Cheerios cereal boxes nationwide.

As part of the brand’s ongoing commitment to nurturing the whole child and connecting families by fostering a shared love of reading, Cheerios invites aspiring authors to enter its New Author Contest now through July 15, 2011.  Entrants must write and submit an original story, in either English or Spanish, suitable for children ages three to eight.  Those who think they have the “write” stuff can visit www.spoonfulsofstoriescontest.com for more information and to enter.

                                image

Cheerios is also announcing that 2009 New Author Contest Grand Prize Winner Laurie Isop, of Renton, Wash., and her book, How Do You Hug a Porcupine?, will be featured inside three million specially-marked boxes of Cheerios this spring. Isop’s story, which was selected from more than 8,000 entries, will also be available in bookstores nationwide as of July 26.  “The Cheerios New Author Contest helped me achieve my decade-old goal of becoming a published author,” said Isop. “Winning the contest was equivalent to winning the literary lottery – the experience has been nothing short of life-changing and has motivated me to write every day.”

“Cheerios believes that reading is a key building block for learning and life,” said Meredith Tutterrow, Cheerios marketing manager.  “Through our New Author Contest, we are proud to support ambitious new writers as they create stories that will inspire young readers for years to come, as well as provide families across America with access to quality books so that they may continue to experience the joys of reading together.”

In conjunction with the launch of this year’s New Author Contest, Cheerios plans to donate 100,000 new books through its charitable partner, First Book.  As part of its Spoonfuls of Stories® program, Cheerios works with First Book to get high quality, award winning books in the hands of children in need.  Since the program’s inception in 2002, Cheerios has given away more than 50 million children’s books free inside cereal boxes. Cheerios has also donated $3.5 million to the nonprofit First Book® to get books to children from low-income families.

“First Book takes great pride in partnering with Cheerios as part of the Spoonfuls of Stories initiative. For the past nine years, Cheerios has been a champion for children’s literacy and access to quality books,” said Kyle Zimmer, President and CEO of First Book. “We are grateful for Cheerios contribution to First Book’s greater mission of providing new books to children across the United States.  Together, Cheerios and First Book are helping to provide the tools children need to realize and attain their dreams.”

Ron Rauss of Warrenton, Va. has officially been named the Grand Prize Winner of the 2010 New Author Contest and will follow in Isop’s footsteps when his winning story Can I Just Take a Nap? is distributed inside Cheerios cereal boxes next spring 2012.

My review~

So have you ever seen a real porcupine? Now imagine hugging one, ouch! Hugging a bunny or a bear are a lot easier to picture! I wouldn’t know how to even begin to wrapping my arms around a porcupine.

After seeing all his friends hug their favorite animals, one brave boy works up the courage to hug a porcupine, but the porcupine isn't so sure he wants to be hugged!

The latest contest winner Laurie Isop and illustrator Gwen Millward  have done a fantastic job!

In 2010, mom and small business owner Laurie Isop, of Renton, Wash., was named Grand Prize Winner. Beginning now, Laurie’s book “How Do You Hug a Porcupine?” is featured in three million Cheerios boxes nationwide, letting children nationwide enjoy a good book at their breakfast table. Of winning the contest, Laurie has said it’s equivalent to winning the ”literary lottery” – she is truly evidence that even the loftiest of aspirations are worth working towards!

I had the pleasure of having a phone interview with Laurie today.

I asked Laurie where she got the idea for her story. She told me it came up around the dinner table. Her family was talking about all the different kinds of people there are and what peoples personalities are like.

I asked her how she found such a great illustrator and she said she was provided by Simon & Schuster.

I asked her who her best critic was. Laurie said she read the book to a group of 5 year olds and they loved the story. She said she also was able to make a few changes because of some of the reactions they had.

Laurie also said she has several other children’s books that she is working on.

How I Keep My Family Happy

For me being a mom is a super big responsibility. I’m the one that keeps our household running smoothly. I’m the one that provides order. Yup, you’re right, I’m tooting my own horn here. I don’t think I’m any different than any other mom. If we don’t get the ball rolling, things don’t get done. So, I guess what I’m saying is making our home a safe haven from the world is how I keep my family happy.

I’m a stay at home mom, so I have time to do most of the housework. My kids still have a few chores, but over the years I’ve learned that it’s easier to do things myself instead of waiting for a kid to do it. That doesn’t mean that I don’t ask the kids to help with things around the house. I think it’s important for kids to learn how to do household chores. Part of being a family is working together.

In the scriptures the Lord (D&C 132:8) says that my house is a house of order. I think as a mom that’s one of my main jobs, to keep things running smoothly. Keeping the house picked up and the meals prepared at the normal times helps keep things running smoothly. I think that makes my family happy.

I have learned over the years that yelling at my kids doesn’t really accomplish anything, so I will talk sternly to them, but I don’t raise my voice. In return, I have two amazing teenagers that don’t talk back to me. This in itself helps all of us to get along better together and makes us all happy.

I also keep my family happy by being constant. I will always listen to what they have to say and I’m always in a cheerful mood. The cheerful mood part is just me, I’m just a very upbeat person.

I keep my family happy by helping to keep us all on schedule for all of our activities and by making our home someplace where my family wants to be. I want our home to be a place to escape to, not a place where my family wants to escape from.

I would love to hear your tips on how you keep your family happy!

Is Housework a Blessing?

Most people think of housework as hated chores to get through, not a blessing.

I consider housework to be a blessing.

I have changed my weekly cleaning day to Thursday, instead of Friday, so I can cook for the Sabbath on Friday. I thought I'd share a few ways I get a blessing and bless others while cleaning.

Every time I get my dusting mitt, out to dust, I think "Oh, I get to pick a new Bible verse today." We have Scripture holder on top of the entertainment center in our living room. Every week, when I dust, I shuffle the Scripture cards and pick a new one. See?

I am blessed while dusting!

Don't like laundry or ironing? Pray for each family member as you handle their clothes.

Don't like dishes? Turn on praise music while you work. Or, invite the family in the kitchen with you, not necessarily to help, but to talk.

If your family disappears when your working in the kitchen, use the time to pray. These can be rare peaceful moments in an otherwise busy household.

Doing housework is not only a blessing for us, we in turn bless our families.

PitStop Review & Giveaway!

PitStop is a stain removal solution that has been developed for garments exposed to underarm perspiration and sweat stains. PitStop has been formulated to remove yellow armpit stains and even ring around the collar without damaging clothing.

Have you ruined your favorite shirt because of stains you just can't remove?

Sweat stain removal can be challenging because not all stains are alike - stains produced by body sweat won't come out with standard stain removers or even bleach. In fact, when it comes to discolored perspiration spots, like armpit stains or ring around the collar, bleach actually sets the stain, making it permanent.

PitStop is used as a sweat stain removal pre-treatment. It’s unique formula gets to the source of the armpit stain, causing a reaction that releases it from your clothing. It is then washed away when laundered.

Have you ever looked for ways to remove yellow armpit stains or ring around the collar from your clothing?

If so, you have probably come across the following remedies: vinegar, bleach, aspirin, hydrogen peroxide, contact lens solution or our personal favorite meat tenderizer. These solutions are not only ineffective but can permanently set sweat stains.

I found a white shirt of my daughters that had some stains in the armpits. I applied the PitStop, rubbbed it together a little, then let it sit for 15 minutes. After that I just threw it in the wash and Voila! The stains were gone! PitStop is amazing!

A Funny Kid Story

Son: "Are you glad I came home?"

Mother: "Depends on what day our talking about!" Because she thinks she's funny!

Son: "After I was born"

Mother: "Oh yeah, that day I was really happy to get out of the hospital and bring you home."

Son: "Sniff...sniff You weren't glad I came home." He is pretending to be sad.

Mother: "Yes! I was really glad to bring you home!" Starting to feel a little guilty...

Son: "hahahahaha" Yep, he's laughing

Father:  "There's been a lot of days between when you were born and now...you have to be specific."

Mother & Father laugh their heads off.

For some reason, the kids didn't laugh as much as the Mother & Father did. Go figure.......

Elder Care and Avalon Health Care

             image

I remember when my parents had to find a way to take care of my grandmother after she started having health problems and could no longer live in her alone in her home. I know they agonized over what they should do and how they could find the best care for her.  At first they took her into their home and hired someone to come in and make her lunch everyday while they were away at work. Eventually they had to find somewhere else for her to live. This was before computers and internet, so they spent hours on the phone calling different facilities and then going to visit them.

It won’t be to many more years and I will be going through the same thing with my parents, so I was excited for the opportunity to look into elder care a little.

Through a little searching I found Avalon Health Care. They have lots of great facilities all specializing in different elements of care, including care centers, hospitals and a senior living communities.

Some of the things to look for in finding a good facility are~

  • Integrity
  • Mutual Respect
  • Excellence
  • Accountability
  • Trust

At Avalon Health Care you can find all of these. They aim for success by recognizing each person’s worth; creating and maintaining an environment where individuality is promoted and dignity is preserved. They base their ideology and approach to care on the core principles of integrity, respect, excellence, accountability and trust. Their foundational belief is~

"We embrace a reverence for life, and a heart for healing

So whether you live in Arizona, California, Utah, Washington or Hawaii you can find the perfect care for the seniors in your family who need a little extra care and comfort. Avalon Health Care is there for you to meet your families needs for elder care.

I am participating in the “What about Mom & Dad” campaign by AvalonHCI.com I received compensation to facilitate this post. However, the views and opinions are my own.

Anne Keefe  created EclipseSpa because she believed in the many rejuvenating and emotional benefits of having spa treatments. Since many of us don’t have the time or the money to spend on luxurious trips to the spa, Anne created products that you can use to relax, revitalize, & rejuvenate right at home.

My friend Michele is a consultant for Eclipse Spa and she sent me two products to review~

Eclipse Spa's sugar scrubs are a rich and decadent treat for your body with flavors and natural ingredients that will make you tingle and glow. Eclipse  Spa scents are designed to transform your emotions while our nutritious ingredients transform your skin into a pool of velvet.

Enriched with hand-harvested African Shea Butter, your skin will be nourished, protected, and incredibly irresistible after this body treatment. Shea Butter provides great protection for the skin and eliminates superficial irritations such as burns, eczema, dermatitis, dermatosis, and damaged hair.  Shea butter is an extremely therapeutic emollient that is known to help heal bruising and soreness. With high levels of vitamin A, E, and other therapeutic elements, these highly antimicrobial and moisturizing properties heal and renew the skin as well as the entire body.

Our Shea Butter is purchased directly from a group of tribes women in Ghana, Africa who have formed a cooperative in their village.  We are happy to be supporting these women with fair trade pricing, creating hope, vibrancy and abundance in their small village.
