Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Review

Monday night my family and I had the opportunity to go to a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. We were all pretty excited to see the movie as we’re big fans of Pirates of the Caribbean fan!

 
We had the opportunity to see it on an IMAX Screen in 3D, so it really came to life! We all felt like we were right there in the movie. I felt like I was in the movie and I really liked that.  Captain Jack Sparrow definitely makes the movie a hit! There were new characters as well as a lot of characters from the past movies, such as Captain Barbossa, Gibbs, and Blackbeard. Penelope Cruz is in this movie and plays Angelica who is a mysterious romantic interest from Captain Jack's past.

The story is about the search for the Fountain of Youth. During their journey to find the Fountain of Youth they encounter a lot of magical and mystical things. We thought the  mermaids (who look really pretty and turn very scary) were great. The story kept us all interested the whole time and we all loved it!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strager Tides sails into theaters on Friday, May 20th and I highly suggest you go check it out! Also, don't forget to enter my Pirates of the Caribbean Giveaway!

A little about the movie~

DreamWorks' REAL STEEL

REAL STEEL opens in theaters everywhere on October 7th! 

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. “Real Steel” is directed by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum” franchise and “Date Night”).

My kids were laughing and really enjoying this DVD. Their favorites were Fan vs. Wild where Fanboy and Chum Chum went camping on the roof of the Frosty Mart. They also really liked the shorts that are included.

I was excited to watch these with the kids, I thought it would be a fun movie night. We popped up some popcorn and grabbed some soda’s (long weekend without swimming, so the kids could have some!) and we watched the Avengers!

We really had fun watching the series. We really enjoyed the sneak peak that reveals what makes the Marvel Super Heroes and Villains so unique. Of course Sloan really liked Wasp (a girl) and Chauncey liked Iron Man. Even though my kids are teenagers, they still really enjoyed watching these. They reminded me of Saturday morning cartoons when my brother and I were growing up!

African Cat’s Activity Guide & Activity Sheets!

                       

Leaping into theaters on Earth Day, 2011, “African Cats” features the real-life love, humor and determination of the kings of the African savanna: Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother’s strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mother of five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a rival lion.

During the film’s opening week (April 22-28), a portion of the proceeds from that week’s ticket sales will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor, a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the African savanna.

For EARTH, we held the program “But a Ticket, Plant a Tree” which led to the planting of 2.7 million trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Last year for OCEANS, the program was “See Oceans, Save Oceans” which helped establish 40,000 acres of marine protected area in The Bahamas, preserving essential coral reefs. Pretty great, right?

As the April 22 opening of the awe-inspiring “African Cats” approaches, Disneynature is tapping into the true power of social media by building awareness of its “See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna” program. In anticipation of the release of her new film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in theaters May 20, 2011, Penelope Cruz received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, April 1, at 11:30 am. in front of the El Capitan Theatre, 6834 Hollywood Boulevard, joined by “On Stranger Tides” co-star Johnny Depp, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall.  An Academy Award® winner Penelope Cruz has proven herself to be one of the most versatile actresses by playing a variety of compelling characters, and most recently, becoming the first actress from Spain to be nominated and to win an Oscar®.

First introduced to American audiences in the Spanish films “Jamon, Jamon” and “Belle Epoque,” in 1998 she starred in her first English language film, “The Hi-Lo Country” for director Stephen Frears opposite Woody Harrelson, Patricia Arquette and Billy Crudup. In 1999, Cruz won the Best Actress award at the 13^th Annual Goya Awards given by the Spanish Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for her role in Fernando Trueba’s “The Girl of Your Dreams.”

Confirming her status as an international actress, Cruz landed a series of coveted roles. She appeared in Billy Bob Thornton’s “All the Pretty Horses,” Fina Torres’ “Woman on Top,” Alejandro Amenabar’s “Open Your Eyes,” and Maria Ripoli’s “Twice Upon a Yesterday”.  Additionally, Cruz co-starred in Pedro Almodovar’s “Live Flesh” and the critically acclaimed “All About My Mother,” which was awarded the Golden Globe® and Oscar® for Best Foreign Film.

Next up for Cruz was a role opposite Johnny Depp in “Blow” for director Ted Demme and “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” opposite Nicolas Cage. After that, Cruz starred opposite Tom Cruise in Cameron Crowe’s thriller “Vanilla Sky.” She then tackled “Masked & Anonymous,” “Fan Fan la Tulipe,” which opened the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, and “Don’t Tempt Me.” She received rave reviews for her performance in “Don’t Move” (“Non ti Muovere”) in which she was honored with a David Di Donatello Award (Italian Oscar) and the European Film Award for Best Actress.

To add to her already diverse choice of film credits, she starred in films including “Gothika,” “Head in the Clouds,” and “Sahara.”

In 2006, Cruz starred in “Volver,” which again teamed her with director and dear friend Pedro Almodovar. Critically-acclaimed for her role as Raimunda, she won the Best Actress awards at the European Film Awards, the Spanish Goya Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and received both Golden Globe® and Oscar® nominations.

Her recent credits include “Elegy” opposite Sir Ben Kingsley and Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” opposite Javier Bardem and Scarlet Johansson. Cruz won an Oscar®, a BAFTA, a New York Film Critics Circle and a National Board of Review award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

In 2009, Cruz and Almodovar were back in action for the fourth time with “Broken Embraces,” for which she again received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Lena. Also that year, she teamed up with “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” director Rob Marshall for the first time and starred alongside Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard in the film version of the musical “Nine.” Her standout portrayal of Carla garnered Screen Actors Guild®, Golden Globe® and Academy Award® nominations.  Her third Oscar® nomination made history as it marked only the third time in Oscar history where the winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress was nominated for the same award again in the following year.

Cruz is involved in the following charities: Worldwide (RED) campaign lead by Bono and Bobby Shiver,  Artists for Peace and Justice in Haiti (APJ), UNICEF The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). She had the honor of working with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity; volunteering in a leprosy clinic in India and she also worked with the Dalai Lama for the House of Tibet in Spain.

Actress/Musician/Singer/Songwriter Zooey Deschanel Performs Three Songs for the Philosophical Bear’s New Big-Screen Endeavor

He’s a bear of very little brain. She’s half of the acclaimed band She & Him. This year, they come together on the big screen in “Winnie the Pooh,” which hits theatres on July 15, 2011. Actress/Musician/Singer/Songwriter Zooey Deschanel (“Almost Famous,” “(500) Days of Summer”) joins Winnie the Pooh and all of his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, performing three songs for the film, including her own take on the classic “Winnie the Pooh” theme song, “A Very Important Thing to Do” and the original end-credit song “So Long,” which was written by Deschanel and performed with She & Him bandmate M. Ward.

“This has been one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had,” says Deschanel. “And I’ve just been thanking my lucky stars that I was able to work on this movie, because it’s delightful.”

Filmmakers were drawn to Deschanel’s signature style. “She was the perfect choice to do the ‘Winnie the Pooh’ song—a classic theme from the Sherman Brothers,” says director Don Hall. “Her music actually embodies the underlying spirit of the movie. We’re taking something that has vintage roots in the sixties, but spinning it in our own way and updating it. If you listen to Zooey’s music with She & Him—that’s their sound to a tee.”

Adds director Stephen Anderson, “It’s a perfect way to start the movie, letting the audience know right off the bat that this is Winnie the Pooh like you know him, but it’s something for today. We wanted to keep the same charm as the original, but give it a fresh spin, a contemporary feel, and she opens the movie with so much freshness, so much energy.”

“It’s always fun to have a contemporary artist rediscover a classic and that’s exactly what Zooey did,” says producer Peter Del Vecho. “She brought her own personality to the song—when she sings about introducing the individual characters, it’s as though she’s known them her whole life—and she has.”

“I’m a big fan of Winnie the Pooh and all his friends,” says Deschanel, who also plays the ukulele in the song. “It’s really hard to pick a favorite: Winnie the Pooh is so special, he loves honey and he’s just cool. Eeyore is amazing, I love Eeyore. And Piglet is so small. It’s really a four-way tie between Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet and Tigger.”

Among the songs Deschanel performed for the film is “A Very Important Thing to Do”—a song that helps illustrate the contest the friends from the Hundred Acre Wood take on to find Eeyore a new tail. She also lent her voice to “Everything is Honey” and “Pooh’s Finale,” joining Jim Cummings (the voice of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger), Tony Award®-winning songwriter Robert Lopez (“Avenue Q”) and other cast members. 

For the end-credit song, Deschanel teamed up with Ward to perform “So Long,” a song Deschanel wrote.  “When I was writing ‘So Long,’ I just held the images for the end credits in my mind,” she says. “I spent a number of days tinkering with ideas, melodies and chord progressions that I thought would fit the images, the new music being written and the original Sherman Brothers stuff-- but still be my own thing. The song definitely has its own feel, but also pays respect to the original.”

Deschanel plays piano for “So Long” and turned to the instrument when it came time to write the song. “I usually write on piano because that's the first instrument that I learned when I was a little kid,” she says. “All of my musical theory knowledge is in linear piano form.”

Her heart, however, is in the vocals. “I’m always thinking in terms of vocals, and arranging a fabric of vocals is the most exciting part. I love to sing backup parts—I always try to squeeze in as many as possible,” she says. “It’s fun; it’s my style.”

Deschanel’s songs, plus the Sherman Brothers classic and a host of original songs by Robert Lopez and wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“The Wonder Pets”), as well as original score from composer Henry Jackman (“The Da Vinci Code,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”), will be included on the “Winnie the Pooh” soundtrack (available Spring 2011 in select international markets, and in the U.S. on July 12, 2011) from Walt Disney Records.
